Australia had batted first after captain Meg Lanning won the toss and thanks to 61 from Beth Mooney, put on 161/8 in 20 overs. For India, Sneh Rana and Renuka Singh took two wickets apiece. In reply, India seemed to be in command as Jemimah Rodrigues (33) and Harmanpreet Kaur (65) added a record 96 runs for the 3rd wicket.

However, when Rodrigues fell on the score of 118, it opened some floodgates and India lost their last 8 wickets for 34 runs, finishing on 152 all out, and lost the gold medal by just 9 runs.

While fans lavished praise on the side for bagging silver, former India skipper Mohammad Azharuddin slammed India women for a 'rubbish' batting display in the summit clash.

He tweeted: "Rubbish batting by the Indian team. No common sense. Gave away a winning game on a platter.”

His tone-deaf tweet led to Twitterati slamming him on social media. Azharuddin received severe backlash for his tweet as fans criticized him for not lauding the Indian women’s team for the silver win and nitpicking the defeat.
