‘This one will always be special’- PM Narendra Modi tweets on India women’s CWG 2022 Silver win

The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side lost to Australia in the gold medal match in a tightly fought contest.

India was 118/2 while chasing a 162-run target to win, but then lost their last 8 wickets for 34 runs and were bowled out for 152 runs in the end and lost the match by 9 runs. Harmanpreet Kaur played a captain’s knock of 65 runs, while Ashleigh Gardner picked three wickets for Australia women.

Earlier, choosing to bat first after winning the toss, Australia was restricted to 161/8 by Indian bowlers despite 61 from Beth Mooney, 36 from Meg Lanning, and 25 from Ashleigh Gardner. For India, Renuka Singh and Sneh Rana picked two wickets each.

PM Modi said the silver medal ‘will always be special’ as it is India's first-ever medal in cricket at the Games.

"Cricket and India are inseparable. Our Women's cricket team played excellent cricket through the CWG and they bring home the prestigious Silver medal. Being the first ever CWG medal in cricket, this one will always be special. Best wishes to all team members for a bright future," tweeted PM Modi.

Apart from PM Modi, the President of India, Droupadi Murmu also tweeted, wishing the Indian team for their silver medal win.

Congratulations to Indian women cricket team for winning silver medal at #CommonwealthGames. You played like champions till the end and your determination during the match was spectacular. Our daughters have made our country proud at Birmingham,” the President wishes.
