The Mithali Raj-led Indian side on Sunday (March 27) suffered a heartbreaking three-wicket defeat at the hands of South Africa in a must-win game of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 at the Hagley Oval, Christchurch.
With this loss, the Women in Blue also got knocked out of the showpiece tournament as South Africa became the fourth team to qualify for the semi-final after Australia, England, and West Indies.
A day after India’s defeat, batting legend Virat Kohli congratulated the Indian Women’s team for their fighting spirit throughout the marquee event.
Taking to Twitter, Kohli wrote: “Always tough to bow out of a tournament you aim to win but our women's team can hold their heads high. You gave it your all and we are proud of you.”
Coming to the match, India posted 274/7 in their 50 overs on the back of half-centuries from Smriti Mandhana (71), Mithali Raj (68), and Shafali Verma (53).
In reply, the South African Women overhauled the target on the last delivery. Laura Wolvaardt starred in the chase with 79-ball 80 while Mignon du Preez (52*) and Lara Goodall (49) chipped in with significant contributions.
As far as India’s campaign is concerned – Mithali Raj and company won three matches in the mega event against Pakistan, West Indies, and Bangladesh while they suffered defeats against New Zealand, England, Australia, and South Africa.
