The Australian women’s team has set a new world record in ODI cricket after they beat South Africa in the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup 2022.
Meg Lanning’s side won their 18th straight ODI match chasing, breaking the record of Rahul Dravid-led Indian side who had won 17 matches batting second during 2005-06.
South African women had set a 272-run target for Australia to chase. Laura Wolvaardt made 90, while captain Sune Luus made 52 for the South Africa side.
However, the Australian team made a mockery of the chase winning the match by 5 wickets and 28 balls to spare. Captain Meg Lanning scored 135* with 15 fours and 1 six, while there were contributions from Rachael Haynes (17), Beth Mooney (21), Tahlia McGrath (32), and Annabel Sutherland (22 not out).
After this win, Australia remains the only unbeaten side in the tournament.
"It was nice to contribute. We speak a lot about the top four trying to bat through and playing those match-winning innings. It was me today, it will be someone else another day (but) it was nice to be there at the end,” Lanning said after the win.
With this 18th consecutive victory while chasing Australia women’s team broke the record of Rahul Dravid-led India, who won 17 games on a trot during 2005-06.
England Women team had won 15 during 2008-09, and are tied at third with New Zealand women team, who also had the same number of wins while chasing during 2015-17. The mighty West Indies men team of the 1980s are next with 14 wins during the period of 1985-86.
