CWC 2022: Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami achieve major World Cup records in India's impressive win over West Indies

India defeated West Indies by 155 runs in their third match of Women's World Cup 2022.

Veteran Indian players Jhulan Goswami and captain Mithali Raj achieved major World Cup records during their recent impressive 155-run win over the West Indies team in the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup 2022.

It was a morale-boosting victory for the Indian team, who were coming off a loss to New Zealand in their last match of the tournament, despite beating Pakistan in their opening encounter.

India batter first after winning the toss and posted 317/8 in 50 overs with Smriti Mandhana making 123 and Harmanpreet Kaur slamming 109, adding 184 runs for the 4th wicket. In return, West Indies was bundled out for 162 runs in 40.3 overs despite their openers adding 100 runs in 12.2 overs.

Deandra Dottin made 62 in 46 balls, while Hayley Matthews made 43 in 36 balls. But after then, the Indian bowlers ran amok as Sneh Rana took 3/22, and Meghna Singh took 2/27. While Smriti Mandhana was named the Player of the Match, she decided to share the award with fellow centurion Harmanpreet Kaur as well.

During the course of the match, India captain Mithali Raj earned herself a world record as she went for the coin toss, as it was the 24th time that Mithali led the Indian team in a Women's World Cup match.

The veteran Indian batter went on to eclipse Belinda Clark's record in the process. The Aussie had led her national team in a total of 23 Women's World Cup matches.

Meanwhile, her fellow veteran teammate, Jhulan Goswami created history on Saturday, as with the wicket of West Indies batter Anisa Mohammed, she became the leading wicket-taker in the history of the Women’s World Cup.

Jhulan Goswami picked a record 40th wicket in Women's World Cup history | GettyGoswami had equaled former Australian bowler Lyn Fullston's tally of 39 wickets in the last game against New Zealand and the 39-year-old now went past her with her record 40th wicket. Jhulan now has 249 wickets in 198 ODI matches for India, and she already holds the world record for most wickets in Women’s ODIs.

India will next play defending champions England on March 16 in Mount Manganui.
