CWC 2022: Jhulan Goswami becomes joint-highest wicket-taker in World Cups; India loses to New Zealand

Lyn Fullston was the highest wicket-taker with 39 scalps in Women's World Cups.

On Thursday, India veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami became the joint highest wicket-taker in the ICC Women's World Cup tournaments. Goswami equaled the 39 wickets taken by Australia's Lyn Fullston from 1982-1988.

The 39-year-old from Chakda accomplished this feat against New Zealand in the ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2022 match in Hamilton.

In the last over of the innings against the White Ferns on Thursday, Goswami took the record-tying wicket by dismissing Katey Martin. This was Goswami's 39th wicket in the Women's World Cup tournaments which brought her at par with record holder Lynette Ann Fullston.

She bowled a brilliant spell in India's first match, returning 2/26 in India's win over Pakistan.

Goswami has 39 wickets to her name in five Women's Cricket World Cups since 2005, spanning a career spanning two decades.

Pooja Vastrakar took four wickets to help India restrict New Zealand to 260/9, in the match at Seddon Park in Hamilton. Amy Satterthwaite and Amelia Kerr scored 75 and 50 runs respectively.

Meanwhile, chasing the tough total of 260 runs to win the match, the Indian team started slow and with wickets falling at regular intervals, fell way behind the asking net run rate. Harmanpreet Kaur top-scored with 71, while Mithali Raj made 31 and Yastika Bhatia managed 28 runs.

India could only manage 198 runs. losing the match by 62 runs, as Lea Tahuhu and Amelia Kerr picked three wickets each.
