The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday (September 2) confirmed that inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy will take place in India from February 14 to 28 next year.

Cricket Club of India in Mumbai and the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium in Vadodara will stage all the matches in the six-team tournament.

The competition was originally slated to be held in Sri Lanka, but has now been shifted to India as Sri Lanka Cricket continues to make the necessary reforms outlined at the ICC’s Annual Conference in July.

Following the decision to relocate the event, the apex body evaluated three potential replacement countries - Bangladesh, India and South Africa - against their strict hosting criteria. The ICC Board officially ratified India as the new host on September 1.

As the inaugural edition of the tournament, it will bring together the best teams in the world in an intense, high-quality competition, while creating even greater incentive for teams to continue rising through the rankings and competing for a place on the global stage.

“With a marquee ICC women’s event now taking place every year, we have a significant opportunity to build greater momentum, provide more consistency and create a stronger rhythm for the women’s game, its players and its fans around the world," he added.

The tournament will feature Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka. It will be played in the T20I format with participating teams to compete in a round-robin league, with the top two sides progressing to the final.
