After leading the way for India’s series-clinching victory in the third and final ODI against West Indies in Trinidad on Wednesday (August 14), skipper Virat Kohli provided an update on his thumb injury, saying the blow has not resulted in a fracture and he “should be good” to feature in the first Test.

During the 27th over of India’s run chase, Virat was hit on the right thumb by a Kemar Roach bouncer. The Indian captain looked in some pain but after being attended by the physio, he continued his innings and eventually guided his team over the line with six wickets and 15 balls to spare.

“I don’t think it’s a fracture otherwise I wouldn’t have continued (batting). It’s just a split of the nail,” Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Asked about the condition of his thumb at the post-match press conference, he said. “Luckily, it’s not broken. When I got hit I thought it was worse than what it turned out to be. But it’s not broken so I should be good for the first Test.”

Chasing the revised target of 255 in a 35-over game, the Men in Blue lost Rohit Sharma (10) cheaply. But the Indian skipper looked in his element during the stiff run chase. Virat added 66 runs for the second wicket with Shikhar Dhawan (36) to set the tone while his 120-run partnership for the fourth wicket Shreyas Iyer (65 off 41 balls) was the final nail in the coffin.

Kohli eventually remained unbeaten on 114 and completed the win with back-to-back boundaries off Carlos Brathwaite in the 33rd over. His dominant knock came off 99 deliveries and it was studded with 14 fours. It was Virat’s second consecutive ton in this series after his classy 120 in the second ODI at the same venue.

With this win, Team India clinched the three-match ODI series 2-0. The two-match Test series between the two sides will kickstart on August 22 in Antigua.
