Virat Kohli put on a show with the bat to help India register a convincing six-wicket victory (DLS method) over West Indies in the third and final ODI in Trinidad on Thursday (August 14).
Chasing the revised target of 255 in a 35-over game, Kohli hit his 43rd ODI ton, second consecutive in this series and ninth against the Windies to seal the deal for the Men in Blue.
After losing Rohit Sharma (10) cheaply, the Indian captain forged a 66-run stand for the second wicket with Shikhar Dhawan (36) and then stitched a series-clinching 120-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer, who proved his mettle once again with a fine knock of 41-ball 65.
Kohli eventually remained unbeaten on 114 and completed the win with back-to-back boundaries off Carlos Brathwaite in the 33rd over. His dominant knock came off 99 deliveries with 14 fours and the India skipper now averages 60.31 in the 50-over format.
With this ton, Virat moved closer to Sachin Tendulkar's record tally of 49 ODI hundreds and also became the first and only batsman to score 20,000 runs in international cricket in a decade. Kohli has amassed 20502 runs across all three formats out of which he has aggregated 20018 in the ongoing decade, surpassing former Australia captain Ricky Ponting who had tallied 18,962 runs in 2000s.
Cricket experts on Twitter were left enthralled by Virat Kohli’s yet another batting exhibition while chasing down the target.
