WI v IND 2019: Chris Gayle considers playing 300 ODIs as a great achievement for himself

Gayle has also become the highest run-getter for West Indies in ODIs.

West Indies veteran cricketer Chris Gayle played his 300th ODI overall and 297th for the country on Sunday against India at Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad. He surpassed Brian Lara's record of 299 ODIs. Gayle was already the front runner in terms of playing most ODIs for West Indies. Lara represented the team in 295 matches.

"It is a great achievement to play 300th ODI. When I look back, I say, could I make 300th ODI and I am very thankful that I am playing this 300th match. I enjoy playing this format without a doubt, I enjoyed batting with you (Darren Ganga) too," Gayle said in a pre-match interview.

"We are trying to build more unity in our team. The guys like Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran those guys will carry West Indies forward. When John Campbell gets his chance, he will have something to showcase. I am there to guide them as much as possible and try to help West Indies cricket as much as possible."

Gayle also became the highest run-getter among West Indies batsmen in ODIs, leaving the great Lara behind who has 10,405 runs. He needed just nine runs before the game, and the southpaw ended with 11 in the match. Although the runs weren't helpful for the team, it did help him to get the record for the most runs by any West Indies batsman.

Apart from most runs and matches in ODI, Gayle holds the record of most sixes (325), outfield catches (123) and most hundreds (25) in this format. No doubt he is one of the greatest of all times for his team.
