WI v ENG 2019: Buttler admits England has had a "reality check" in Barbados

WI v ENG 2019: Buttler admits England has had a "reality check" in Barbados

After bowling the visitors all-out for just 77 in response to their 289, West Indies took their third innings lead past 600.

Jos Buttler believes that England's Joe Root led unit has been given a timely reminder of their issues in either skill across first three days of the ongoing first Test against West Indies at the Kensington Oval.

Buttler, who was one of five batsmen that Kemar Roach got out in his outstanding spell of 5/17 that ensured an England collapse to just 77 all-out in the first innings, feels there is an "opportunity to have a much better showing" by drawing the Test match. But he admitted that the tourists have conceded a lot of ground to Jason Holder's men.

"They're both pretty tough days. Yesterday was a really poor reflection on us as a side. We can do much better than that," Buttler said at the end of Day 3 as Holder(202*) and Shane Dowrich(116*) stretched Windies' lead towards impregnable proportions with their unbeaten 295 runs seventh-wicket stand.

"Today(with hosts posting a mind-boggling target of 628) was pretty thankless as well out there. As much as we could, we stuck together. The guys kept running in, [Ben] Stokes and [James] Anderson didn't get any rewards for it but it showed their passion for playing for England."

After winning 4-1 against India and 3-0 in Sri Lanka, captain Joe Root had publicly announced England's goal to become the No.1 ranked Test side in the world. This then must be a tough pill to swallow for his team.

"It was tough to explain, I guess. Our bowlers having not had long to rest can make a bit of a difference. The guys trucked in all day and showed immense amount of determination and real fitness to keep going," Buttler further said.

"But with the bat we were well below, and with our aim of getting to the No.1 side in the world, that is nowhere near good enough. We've had a good run of games but we obviously played poorly adapting to conditions. We have to be better at coming through that tough situation."

England ended the day's play at 56/0 needing another 572 runs with Rory Burns and Keaton Jennings not out overnight.
