“I got a chance to..”- Suryakumar Yadav opens up about controversial boundary catch in T20 World Cup final

Suryakumar Yadav's catch was compared to Kapil Dev's catch in 1983 World Cup final.

Suryakumar Yadav sealed the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 for India as he took an excellent catch at the boundary in Barbados to send back the dangerous David Miller on the first ball of the final over.

South Africa needed 16 runs in the last 6 balls of the final and the over was being bowled by Hardik Pandya. David Miller got a wide full toss and he smashed the ball towards long-off. The ball seemed to be sailing over the boundary when Suryakumar was able to catch the ball inside the ropes at long-off, realized it just as he went over the boundary, and then came back in to complete an astonishing catch.

Many people claimed that the catch was unfair after multiple camera views of it became popular on social media.

Additionally, some social media users asserted that the boundary cushion was purposefully moved outside during the second innings to unfairly benefit the Indian team.

However, Suryakumar Yadav has revealed that he had nothing to do with the boundary cushion being moved and he didn’t touch the padding as well.

"I didn't touch the line when I caught the ball in the final match against South Africa. We can't keep everyone happy. I did what occurred to me as correct. By the grace of God, I was there when the ball came towards me. I got a chance to take the catch. I am relishing that moment," Suryakumar Yadav told media.

"I had practiced many times to take a catch like that one. During the match, my mind was calm. God gave me an opportunity to do well for the country," he added.

Suryakumar Yadav was rested for the ongoing Zimbabwe tour and is expected to return to Team India for the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka later this month.
