Team India qualified for the T20 World Cup 2024 final with an emphatic 68-run victory over England in the second semi-final at the Providence Stadium, Guyana on Thursday (June 27).
After the game, the Indian players and the support staff gathered in the dressing room where fielding coach T Dilip announced the ‘Best Fielder’ award.
Dilip mentioned the names of Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Akshar Patel and Suryakumar Yadav for showing incredible zeal in shifting their positions to the hot zones every time.
Dilip praised Surya for the backflip run out of Adil Rashid and Kuldeep Yadav for the run out of Liam Livingstone. The fielding coach also singled out Rishabh Pant for being terrific behind the stumps on a pitch that had odd bounce.
T Dilip then called up former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik to present the fielder of the match medal.
Karthik, who retired from all forms of cricket after the IPL 2024 season, bestowed Pant with the medal and had special words reserved in praise of the wicketkeeper-batter.
"There are many stories in sport but there are not many better than to the person I am giving the medal to. What he's gone through a year ago, I think six months ago, no one expected him to be in this team, not many would have expected him to play this sport this early, but for him to come out here and play the way he has done, all are very happy for him and he has made millions happy by just being on the field - Rishabh Pant," Karthik said.
India will now take on South Africa in the title clash at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados on Saturday (June 29).
Just like India, the Proteas have made it to the final without losing a single match in the competition. They outclassed Afghanistan by nine wickets in the first semi-final to book their maiden place in the World Cup final.
