T20 World Cup 2024: Shubman Gill not being sent back home because of disciplinary issues, confirms source

Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan are expected to return home at the end of the group stage.

Shubman Gill | GettySpeculations were rife that the Indian team management was not happy with Shubman Gill's conduct during their New York leg of the T20 World Cup 2024.

Gill was one of the four reserve players who travelled with the 15-member squad for the showpiece event, currently taking place in the USA and West Indies.

Shubman and fast bowler Avesh Khan are expected to return home at the end of the group stage but it's not because of any disciplinary issues, India Today reported.

There were rumours on social media that Shubman Gill had unfollowed Rohit Sharma on Instagram and his relationship with the Indian skipper had turned sour.

However, a source in the know of developments confirmed to India Today that the team management not being happy with Gill are not true.

Meanwhile, the team management will take a call on whether they need four travelling reserves for the remainder of the tournament or release a couple of them ahead of Super 8s.

Earlier, news agency PTI reported that Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan were set to depart for India after the end of the group stage while Rinku Singh and Khaleel Ahmed would continue travelling with the 15-man squad to the Caribbean, where the T20 World Cup games will be played from the Super 8 round onwards.

Having won their first three matches against Ireland, Pakistan and USA, Team India have already qualified for the Super 8s from Group A. USA are the second team to advance to the next round from this group.
