ICC T20 World Cup 2024 hosts West Indies opened their tournament against Papua New Guinea (PNG) on June 2, in Guyana. Earlier co-hosts USA had defeated Canada in the tournament opener on June 1.

However, the crowd at the Providence Stadium in Guyana for the match between West Indies and PNG was noticeably missing. The seats at the stadium were half-filled as most of the stands across the venue remained empty and isolated.

West Indies captain Rovman Powell won the toss and opted to bowl first against PNG in the opening Group C match.

Amid a low turnout in the first T20 World Cup game in the Caribbean, the internet was abuzz, labeling it a disappointment.
