Sourav Ganguly picks his two favorites for T20 World Cup 2024, shares views on Rinku Singh's snub from India squad

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 is slated to be held in the West Indies and USA next month.

Sourav Ganguly | GettyThere is a lot of excitement in the cricket fraternity for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, slated to be held in the West Indies and USA from June 1 to June 29.

Ahead of the marquee event, cricket experts have started picking their favorites. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has also joined the bandwagon, naming India and Australia as the two best teams for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

While many believe that it will be the most unpredictable ICC events in recent times due to the unknown nature of surfaces in the United States, Ganguly said India and Australia will be the teams to beat.

"India and Australia the two best teams of the tournament. I'm sure they will do the same thing in the USA and the West Indies," Ganguly said, as quoted by PTI.

Rinku Singh’s omission was one of the highlights of India’s squad announced for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 earlier this week.

The southpaw failed to make the cut despite doing well in whatever opportunities he got to represent India in the shortest format so far.

In 15 T20Is and 11 innings, Rinku has amassed 356 runs at an average of 89 and a strike rate of 176.24 while batting in the middle-order. He also has two half-centuries to his name.

While Rinku didn't find a place in the 15-member touring party, he has been included in the travelling reserves alongside Shubman Gill, Avesh Khan, and Khaleel Ahmed.

According to Ganguly, Rinku Singh may have missed out as India wanted to go with an "extra spinner" keeping in mind the slow tracks in the Caribbean.

"It's West Indies. The wickets may be slow and assist spin so they (selectors) wanted to go with another spinner. Maybe because of that Rinku didn't get an opportunity but it's just the beginning for Rinku," he stated.

However, Ganguly was pleased with India’s overall squad selected for the global showpiece tournament.

"It's a fabulous squad, they are all match winners. All 15 are good enough to be selected, I'm sure Rohit (Sharma) and Rahul (Dravid) will pick the best," Ganguly said.
