“Another year where T20 World Cup follows the IPL final”: R Ashwin expresses concerns over India’s cricket schedule

Team India haven't won an ICC tournament since 2013.

Team India | GettyIt's been more than a decade since Team India last won an ICC tournament. After MS Dhoni led the side to a Champions Trophy triumph in 2013, India have lost as many as five ICC event finals and bowed out in the semi-finals on numerous occasions.

While former skipper Virat Kohli took the Indian team to great heights, he failed to clinch an ICC trophy. The same has been the case with current captain Rohit Sharma, under whom the team lost the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final to England.

Last year, the Rohit-led side also suffered heartbreaking defeats at the hands of Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final and the Cricket World Cup final.

Despite the success in bilateral cricket, the search for the elusive ICC title goes on and the Indian team will get another opportunity to end the trophy drought in the T20 World Cup later this year.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, veteran off-spinner R Ashwin acknowledged that the team is indeed witnessing an ICC trophy drought. He also expressed concerns that the T20 World Cup 2024 is again scheduled right after the IPL.

"We have been on a drought to win ICC trophies for years now and have consistently been knocked out in the semis or finals. And this is yet another year where the ICC T20 World Cup follows the IPL final by just five days, like in the recent past," Ashwin said.

The 2024 edition of Indian Premier League is all set to get underway on March 22. Since the Lok Sabha elections are slated to take place this year, the BCCI has announced the fixtures of only 21 matches so far and will soon unveil the remaining schedule.

Meanwhile, multiple reports have claimed that the IPL 2024 final will be played on May 26 – just five days before the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

It is pertinent to mention here that the ICC has already announced the schedule for the T20 World Cup 2024, due to be held in the West Indies and USA from June 1 to June 29. India will open their campaign against Ireland on June 5 in New York.
