Star batter Virat Kohli hasn’t played a T20I since the Indian cricket team’s T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final exit.
Besides Test cricket, Kohli’s main focus was on ODIs this year as the 50-over World Cup was scheduled at home. With the T20 World Cup slated to take place in the West Indies and USA next year, his inclusion in the shortest format has become a topic of debate.
Meanwhile, a report published in Sports Tak suggests that there is no certainty whether Kohli will feature in the 2024 edition of T20 World Cup or not.
According to the report, the BCCI and selectors will discuss his future in the shortest format of the game.
“As of now it looks very difficult for him to make the cut but the management will speak to him and then a final call will be taken as the management doesn't want to jump the gun, which is why a meeting with him is important before reaching any conclusion on his T20 format and World Cup slot,” the source quoted as saying by Sports Tak.
“See we have informed Rohit that if he will play he will lead the team and you players will be there in the squad so he (Rohit) and the coach needs to take care of it. I don't see him play Afghanistan T20 as well but let's wait and see how things developing,” the source added.
Virat Kohli boasts a phenomenal record in T20Is, amassing 4008 runs from 115 matches at an average of 52.73 and a strike rate of 137.96 with one hundred and 37 half-centuries.
His record in the T20 World Cup is even more astonishing. He has played 15 innings across five editions, scoring 1141 runs at an average of 81.50 and a strike rate of 131.30, including 14 fifties.
In fact, Kohli was the Player-of-the-Tournament in the 2014 and 2016 editions of T20 World Cups. He also finished the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia as the leading run-getter.
Over the years, Kohli has been a brilliant performer in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well. In 237 matches, he has aggregated 7263 runs at an average of 37.25 and a strike rate of 130.02, including seven tons and 50 half-centuries. He was the fourth highest run-getter in the IPL 2023 season, scoring 639 runs in 14 innings at an average of 53.25 and a strike rate of 139.82 with two hundreds and six fifties.
