Team India failed to end the lost-standing ICC trophy drought this year as they bowed out of the T20 World Cup 2022 with a 10-wicket thrashing at the hands of England in the semi-final.
After the embarrassing ouster, the Rohit Sharma-led side drew flak from the fans, media and experts alike. Many of them questioned the team management for not considering Yuzvendra Chahal in the playing XI despite the wrist spinners doing well in the showpiece tournament.
Chahal was part of India’s T20 World Cup 2022 squad but the likes of R Ashwin and Akshar preferred over him in the XI.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, veteran wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik said Chahal would've made “lot more damage” but added that everyone now has the benefit of hindsight.
“These are all calls that are taken by the captain and coach with the belief they had in a certain player. To be fair, Ashwin started the tournament well but probably didn't end well. But Chahal would've definitely made a lot more damage, it could've been an interesting choice. But hindsight is a very interesting thing to look at once the results come out,” Karthik stated.
“All in all, if we look at the overall picture of the World Cup and Asia Cup, we expect a lot of better from Team India and that's the right way to put it,” he added.
Team India will kick-start the year 2023 with a home T20I series against Sri Lanka, starting January 3 in Mumbai.
For the series, senior batters like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul have been excluded from the side. All-rounder Hardik Pandya has been named the captain of the T20I team with star batter Suryakumar Yadav set to play the role of a deputy.
Yuzvendra Chahal is also part of the three-match T20I series and the subsequent three ODIs against Sri Lanka.
