Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar voiced against having a batting coach in Vikram Rathour when Team India has one of the greatest batters of all time as its head coach Rahul Dravid. His comments came after India’s disappointing exit from the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2022.
As India’s batting wasn’t very impressive in the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, the former skipper believes that the Indian cricket team doesn't need a batting coach, saying he doesn’t think there would be a better batting coach than Dravid if he is with the team.
Sunil Gavaskar said during a discussion on Aaj Tak: “When you have Rahul Dravid, who is one of the greatest batters of all time, then you don't need a batting coach. When Rahul Dravid says something and Vikram Rathour says something else, batters will get confused. You have to understand this.”
The legendary batter also stated that having a large number of support staff members causes confusion among the players, so only the necessary people should be present around the team.
He added, “If you don't want too many members in the support staff, don't send them with the team. Take only those who are necessary. In 1983 World Cup, we had one manager. Same in 1985. When the team won in 2011, there weren't many people as well. I'm surprised the number of support staff is higher than the team members. Players get confused on whom to listen.”
