Pakistan team mentor Matthew Hayden said that the Men in Green are drawing inspiration from their historic 1992 World Cup final glory, as they gear up to take on England in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, which will be held at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday (November 10).
Notably, the Imran Khan-led Pakistan cricket team defeated England by 22 runs in the 1992 ODI World Cup final to claim their first ICC trophy at the MCG, the same venue where the T20 World Cup 2022 final will be held.
And Hayden said that the Babar Azam-led side is aiming to repeat history against the same opposition on Sunday.
The Aussie further said that he is hoping the current Pakistan team will also have some inspirational stories like the 1992 team to tell the young generation, while revealing PCB chief Ramiz Raja addressed the team on November 11 and shared some stories from the 1992 World Cup triumph.
Matthew Hayden said at a press conference at the MCG: “He was reliving some of those stories around the '92 World Cup. And I think that's great, because that's why you play the game. These boys .... their careers will be but a blink and they'll be looking back on this tournament.”
He added, “And they'll tell these stories around campfires in their villages, in media conferences like the one we are here and it will be an important chapter of Pakistan cricket - as the '92 campaign was.”
The team mentor signed off by saying, “I think the bases are covered for the final. I think both sides actually have got very equal set-ups. It's just 'even-stevens'. At the start of this tournament, I always thought that England was going to be a huge threat. And here we are on the edge of a final.”
