Phillips came to bat at No. 4 when the Kiwis were reeling at 7/2 in the third over. The scorecard soon turned 15/3 as skipper Kane Williamson (8) too fell cheaply.

Amid the pressure situation, Phillips rose to the occasion and added 84 runs for the fourth wicket with Daryl Mitchell, who contributed only 22 before getting out in the 15th over.

While New Zealand kept losing wickets at regular intervals, Glenn Phillips held the one end firmly and slammed his century in the penultimate over off 61 balls. It was the second century of his T20i career and his first in the T20 World Cup.

Phillips was eventually dismissed in the final over by Lahiru Kumara but not before the right-hander smashed 104 off 64 balls, including 10 fours and 4 sixes.

Thanks to his hundred, the Black Caps piled up a stiff 167/7 in their stipulated 20 overs.

For his stunning display with the bat, Glenn Phillips received rich praise from the cricket fraternity on Twitter.
