Pakistan captain Babar Azam defended his decision to play an extra fast bowler against Zimbabwe despite his team suffering a humiliating defeat on Thursday (October 27) in the T20 World Cup 2022.

The Pakistan team failed to chase down 131 runs as they suffered an embarrassing defeat against Zimbabwe to put their chances to make it to the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2022 in jeopardy, having already suffered a crushing defeat against India in their tournament opener.

Well, Mohammad Wasim Jr was included in Pakistan’s playing XI at the expense of Asif Ali, and it might have played a role in the team’s defeat, as the Men in Green couldn’t score 131 runs against Zimbabwe. However, Wasim was exceptional with the ball, finishing with impressive figures of 4/24 in Perth.

After Pakistan’s shocking loss to Zimbabwe, Babar said they took the right decision to pick an extra pacer for Wasim as per the pitch, but admitted that his team’s performance was not up to the mark in all three departments.

He said the defeat was hard to digest, but they have to regroup and bounce back strongly to build chances for the semifinals.

Babar Azam said after the match: “It's very hard as a team or as a captain. We weren't up to the mark in all three departments, but we'll sit and discuss the mistakes and then we'll come back strongly.”

He added, “This pitch required fast bowlers, so we had that in the planning and that's why we had an extra fast bowler. To be honest, it's hard, but we have two days and we'll have a sit together and discuss.”
