Sri Lanka was hit by another injury as pacer Binura Fernando was ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia with a hamstring injury on Thursday (October 27).
Fernando hurt his left hamstring during Sri Lanka's seven-wicket loss to Australia in their Super 12 match in Perth, which ruled the 27-year-old out of the rest of the tournament.
The Islanders have already lost Danushka Gunathilaka (hamstring), Dushmantha Chameera (calf), and Dilshan Madushanka (quad) to injuries, and now Fernando’s injury has further weakened their side.
The latest injury forced Sri Lanka to make another change to their squad at the T20 World Cup 2022, as the young pacer Asitha Fernando has been added to the 15-member squad as a replacement for the injured Binura Fernando for the rest of the tournament.
Fernando's inclusion in Sri Lanka's 15-player squad was approved by the Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 on Thursday. He is likely to play in Sri Lanka’s next match against New Zealand on October 29 in Sydney.
Notably, Sri Lanka is currently placed in the second spot in the Group 1 table with one win and a solitary loss, and their upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 match against New Zealand is a must-win match for the side.
Here’s Sri Lanka’s updated T20 World Cup 2022 squad:
Dasun Shanaka (C), Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dhananjaya de Silva, Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Jeffrey Vandersay, Chamika Karunaratne, Kasun Rajitha, Ashen Bandara, Lahiru Kumara, Pramod Madushan, Asita Fernando.
