The T20 World Cup 2022 match between South Africa and Zimbabwe might have been rained out in Hobart, but it saw a rare occurrence of an event on the cricket field. The encounter was interrupted by rain multiple times and eventually called off.
Zimbabwe made 79/5 in 9 overs and South Africa scored 51 in just 3 overs out of 7 allotted to them according to the DLS method rules. But persistent rains caused the match to be declared a no result.
However, during Zimbabwe’s innings, in the ninth over, something rare was seen. On the 3rd ball, Anrich Nortje bowled a back-of-a-length delivery to Zimbabwe's Milton Shumba. The batter tried to go for a reverse scoop but failed in executing it properly. The ball went towards the fine-leg fielder Lungi Ngidi, who threw the ball to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock.
De Kock had taken one glove off his hands and thrown it onto the ground in order to collect the ball and throw it. However, the ball took an awkward bounce, hit De Kock on his knee, and bounced and rolled towards the keeping glove on the ground, touching it.

The umpire then discussed the issue and awarded Zimbabwe five penalty runs. For a moment, Nortje and De Kock looked baffled at the umpire’s decision but the penalty was for the ball hitting an object intentionally placed on the field of play.
