T20 World Cup 2022: UAE defeats Namibia by 7 runs; paves way for Netherlands' qualification in Super 12s

Sri Lanka also qualified for Super 12s round and will join Australia and England in Group 1.

UAE players celebrate after beating Namibia | GettyThe Netherlands team qualified for the Super 12s round in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2022 and will join group 2 in the main round joining the likes of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and South Africa, apart from one more qualifier.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka will join Group 1 in the Super 12s round to join the likes of England, Australia, and New Zealand.

All because of UAE defeating Namibia in the second match of the qualifying round today at Geelong on October 20, 2022. Namibia had to win this match in order to stay alive in the tournament and knock out the Netherlands, who had lost to Sri Lanka earlier in the day.

UAE batted first after winning the toss and posited 148/3 in 20 overs. Muhammad Waseem made 50 and captain C Rizwan made 43*, while Basil Hameed contributed 25*.

In reply, the Namibia team couldn’t get to a good start with Zahoor Khan and Basil Hameed taking 2 wickets each. David Wiese saved some grace with 55 and Ruben Trumpelmann scored 25 runs, as Namibia inched closer to victory. But in the end, they fell 7 runs short, finishing on 141/8.

With this loss, Namibia and UAE were eliminated from T20 World Cup, while Sri Lanka and the Netherlands went through to the main Super 12s round.

UAE 148/3 (M WASEEM 50, C RIZWAN 43*) defeated NAM 141/8 (D WIESE 55; B HAMEED 2/17) by 7 runs.
