Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir believes Sri Lanka could be a threat to Team India if they gain entry into the Men in Blue’s group during the Super 12 stage. Sri Lanka earlier this year clinched the Asia Cup for the sixth time by defeating Pakistan in the finals.
Gambhir thinks that the return of star pacers Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Kumara will further enhance the Lankan team’s lineup.
"Sri Lanka, because of the kind of success they have had at the Asia Cup. The way they are playing, the way they are probably peaking at the right time," Gambhir said while speaking on Star Sports show 'Game Plan'.
"And with Chameera and Lahiru Kumara coming in, they probably got most of their places covered. They are going to be a threat and so they are going to take a lot of confidence in the T20 World Cup."
Based on their standings from the preceding edition, the Lankan Lions are one of the four teams who have advanced to the T20 World Cup's first round. If they finish first or second in Group A, they would qualify for the Super 12 stage.
The former cricketer-turned-commentator added that no team should be taken lightly.
"Just like any other game, just like against Pakistan, South Africa, or any other game. No team can be taken lightly especially in a format like T20, because in a T20, the shorter the format, any team can upset anyone," he said.
Rohit Sharma and Co. will begin their campaign on October 23 against arch-rivals Pakistan at the iconic MCG.
