Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022, Team India have suffered an injury scare as ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the ongoing T20I series against South Africa due to a stress fracture on his lower back.
On Thursday (September 29), news agency PTI reported that the recurring back injury will take at least 4-6 months to recover and Bumrah won’t be able to take part in the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia.
With India’s campaign still more than weeks away, BCCI has reportedly asked its medical team to assess Bumrah’s fitness thoroughly and is hopeful of the star pacer’s participation in the marquee event, starting October 16.
Speaking to News18, BCCI sources on Friday (September 30) said that the medical team is conducting repeated tests and scans on Bumrah. As of now, he won’t be travelling with the Indian squad to Australia on October 5 and will fly at a later date provided that he is declared fit.
“BCCI is keen on having Bumrah for the World Cup and has asked the medical team to asses him thoroughly in NCA. The board is banking on even a one per cent chance that he maybe able to play in Australia,” News18 report stated.
Earlier in the day, BCCI named Mohammed Siraj as replacement for Jasprit Bumrah for the remainder of the three-match T20I series against South Africa.
Before the first T20I between India and South Africa at Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday (September 28), the BCCI had said that Bumrah was ruled out of the match after complaining of back pain during practice session on Tuesday (September 27).
“Jasprit Bumrah complained of back pain during India`s practice session on Tuesday. The BCCI Medical Team assessed him. He is ruled out of the first T20I," BCCI had said in a statement on Twitter.
