Australia captain Aaron Finch heaped rich praise on leg-spinner Adam Zampa for his terrific and world-class performance against Sri Lanka in their Super 12 match of Group 1 in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.
At Dubai International Stadium on Thursday, October 28, Zampa came up with a fantastic performance with the ball, returning excellent figures of 2/12 in 4 overs to help Australia restrict Sri Lanka to 154 and eventually win the game by 7 wickets.
Sri Lanka's downfall started with Charith Asalanka's wicket by Zampa, as the Islanders managed only 154, which Australia chased down in 17 overs, courtesy of David Warner's knock of 65 in Dubai.
Finch told the host broadcaster Star Sports: “That was a really good performance. Sri Lanka got off to a flier. But Zampa dragged it back, and then Starc. We felt it was a really good wicket and to chase that down was nice. When you're looking at the impact on the game, Zamps was terrific tonight. He was fantastic, got big wickets. That was a world-class performance from him.”
Chasing 155, Australia got off to a flying start as their openers Finch (37) and Warner put on the biggest powerplay score (63) against Sri Lanka in Dubai to take the side over the line inside 17 overs.
The skipper noted, “When the ball was flying around it felt like they were going at 15 an over, but you look up and it was 8 an over. Nice when you get a couple in the middle of the bat early. We knew that we had to take a chance against the quicks early on with the spinners coming in later.”
Finch signed off by saying that it’s “always a great battle with England no matter the format” as Australia is set to face the 2019 World Cup winners on Saturday, October 30, in the T20 World Cup 2021.
