West Indies fast bowler Obed McCoy has been ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 after he suffered a right leg injury last week which ended his tournament.
The defending champions West Indies, on Wednesday (October 27), announced that veteran all-rounder Jason Holder has been added to their T20 World Cup squad as a replacement for McCoy after the ICC technical committee approved their request.
McCoy picked up an injury to his right leg during West Indies’ six-wicket loss to England in their opening game in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in Sharjah last Saturday and had to miss his team’s another eight-wicket loss to South Africa on Tuesday, October 26.
West Indies chief selector Roger Harper stated, “Jason Holder has been in the UAE for a while now and will fit quite well into the team unit. He is an experienced and knowledgeable cricketer who we know will be eager and excited to grab the opportunity.”
The 24-year-old pacer became the second player from the West Indies camp to be ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021 as they already lost after all-rounder Fabian Allen, to an ankle injury and was replaced by the spinner Akeal Hosein.
Having lost both of their opening matches in the Super 12s, the West Indies need to beat Bangladesh on Friday (October 29) to have any hope of making the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2021.
Noteworthy, Holder, who has so far played 199 international games, including 27 T20Is, for the West Indie so far, was among the traveling reserves in the UAE.
The 29-year-old all-rounder played for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the recently concluded IPL 2021 and he will be available immediately for the West Indies’ next game against Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup 2021.
