Indian cricket team is yet to win a single ICC trophy under the captaincy of Virat Kohli despite playing brilliant cricket over the past few years across the formats, but star leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal feels India’s long wait will end later this year.
India’s wrist spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Chahal who have been stars in Men in Blue’s success in the white-ball format appeared at India Today’s E-Salaam Cricket 2020 where the two talked about various topics including the future of the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2020.
The decision on the fate of the T20 World Cup 2020 is still pending due to the Coronavirus pandemic with the hosts Australia keen to host the showpiece event in October-November event with a limited number of spectators in stadiums.
However, Chahal and Kuldeep look confident about T20 World Cup happening this year amid the COVID-19 crisis, as the number of Coronavirus cases are reducing in Australia and some other countries.
Chahal said India is the top contender for the T20 World Cup title having a well-balanced T20 squad at the team while Kuldeep also hopes that Men in Blue will bring the trophy back at home.
Chahal said: “We have a really good team, we have good all-rounders, batsmen and especially the bowlers. If you ask me then I think we will be the No. 1 contenders.”

Meanwhile, the BCCI is planning to host IPL 2020 in the September-October window amid the COVID-19 crisis in India if the T20 World Cup 2020 gets postponed.
And Chahal added: “This is really good news for the game and for the fans. If the lockdown didn't happen then we wouldn't have got the time to do anything. But now with the resumption of cricket, we will get to do the things that we were missing out on. Ganguly sir also said that the IPL also might be possible. But the positive sign is that cricket is going to start again, it doesn't matter whether it takes a bit of time.”
On the other hand, the chinaman spin bowler Kuldeep was also hopeful of resuming cricket in the next two months’ time. He added, “I miss the feeling of playing with the team. But now with the reducing number of cases in New Zealand and Australia, the T20 World Cup might also be possible. It will take a bit more time, maybe 1-2 months, but if cricket returns after that it will be great for all of us.”
On India’s T20 World Cup 2020 chances, Kuldeep signed off by saying, “Our spin attack has been one of the best, so has been the batting. We keep the team as our priority always, which increases our chances of winning. Hopefully, the T20 World Cup will happen and get the trophy back home.”
