Langer insists potential IPL cancellation wouldn't effect Australia's T20 World Cup planning

The Men's T20 World Cup is scheduled to kickstart on October 18 in Australia.

Top Australian players were due to join their respective franchises for IPL 2020 | GettyHead coach Justin Langer believes Australia has progressed to an extent with its T20 World Cup planning where potential cancellation of IPL 2020 wouldn't affect the nation's quest for its maiden title later this year.

Top Aussie players were due to join their respective IPL franchises for the league's 13th edition, which has already been suspended until at least April 15 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over the years, the IPL has served as a fantastic selection platform for Australian players in the T20I set-up, considering the highly competitive environment and the foreign conditions that the league is played in.

"Before this crisis started to unravel, we were absolutely determined for our guys to play the IPL," Langer told reporters. "Because with the T20 World Cup coming up, there's no better grounding, no better practice, no better tournament for them to get ready for that."

"But obviously things have changed a lot. The health of not only our individual players, but also our country and India as a whole is paramount here."

"In terms of selection, I'm not too stressed about it ... one or two positions in our World Cup side are up for grabs. It's a very, very settled team. We played great cricket against South Africa," he added.

With international cricket globally suspended because of the outbreak, Australia's next lot of T20I fixtures are also under serious danger; uncertainty around them threatens the ruin the team's preparations for the showpiece event down under.

"There's no better practice than match practice and I'm sure that we will, when the time's right, (have that)," Langer said. "We either manufacture it (in intra-squad games) or we'll have plenty of that if this crisis slows down quicker than we think."

Australia's important Test championship fixtures in Bangladesh scheduled for June might also be suspended due to the COVID-19 crisis.

"We were very close to having a handle on who we thought would be best to be selected for the Bangladesh tour," Langer said. "We will put that on hold for a bit. But we've been planning for Bangladesh for some time and if it does go ahead then we'll be ready."
