Women’s T20WC 2020: Cricket fraternity consoles and lauds Indian women team after loss in final

Indian women's team had come into the finals unbeaten in league stages.

An emotional Shafali Verma being consoled by Mandhana and Deol | Twitter It proved to be an anti-climatic ending for the Indian women’s team in the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 as their unbeaten run was snapped in the final against Australia women at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), in heart-breaking fashion.

Tasked with chasing 185 runs under pressure, India lost Shafali Verma, the most in-form batter in the first over and never recovered from it. Deepti Sharma made 33, while Mandhana (11), Rodrigues (0), and Kaur (4) all failed to get going as the required run-rate began to rise.

Shafali Verma was inconsolable as the Indian team was bowled out for 99 runs with Megan Schutt picked four wickets and Jess Jonassen picked 3 wickets. It was a big heartbreak for the Women in Blue, three years after they narrowly missed the chance to win the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 against England.

The Indian cricket fraternity, along with Sir Viv Richards was all supportive of the women’s team despite the big loss and consoled the whole unit for their brilliant showing uptil the final.

India lost only one game in the tournament. So did Australia. Both teams lost to each other. India beat Aus in the tournament opener. Australia beat India in the finals. Such is life.... #WT20WC #AusvInd
