Team India’s explosive opener Abhishek Sharma revealed crucial advice he received from his mentor and ex-India cricketer Yuvraj Singh when he was struggling for runs in the recent T20 World Cup 2026.
Abhishek Sharma was primed to rock the T20 World Cup 2026, but it ended in him scoring three consecutive ducks and one fifty against Zimbabwe. He finally found his form when India clashed with New Zealand in the final of the tournament in Ahmedabad. His explosive fifty enabled India to put on a huge score and finish the tournament.
Yet, Abhishek bounced back from the lows to celebrate the T20 World Cup win with his jubilant teammates.
Asked if he was in touch with Yuvraj during the low phase, Abhishek revealed a big piece of advice he received from the dual World Cup winner.
“I spoke to Yuvi paaji regularly. He has always been someone I can go to for honest advice. His message was simple: Don’t change who you are as a player. He told me that aggressive players will have phases like this, but if you keep backing your strengths, runs will come,” Abhishek told Hindustan Times.
Abhishek made 55 against Zimbabwe and then destroyed New Zealand with a 21-ball 52 in the final against New Zealand, helping India score almost 100 runs in the powerplay.
“It was mostly about trusting my natural game. I did not want to go away from the style that got me to this level. The only thing I tried to do was be a bit clearer in my shot selection early on," Abhishek said.
The three ducks had left Abhishek dejected and close to an emotional breakdown before senior teammates stepped in to support him.
“You cannot completely avoid that pressure, especially in a country like India, where cricket means so much to people. For me, the key was to focus on the team environment and not get too caught up in outside noise," Abhishek said.
Abhishek Sharma will be seen in action for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the upcoming IPL 2026.
