Team India have achieved unprecedented success in recent ICC white-ball tournaments, winning 30 of their last 32 completed matches. This incredible run highlights their status as a leading force in world cricket.

The Men in Blue have also made 4 consecutive global tournament finals, winning three and losing one. The triumphs include two T20 World Cup titles and a Champions Trophy.

Speaking on the latest episode of The ICC Review, Australian legend Ricky Ponting reflected on India’s recent success across white-ball ICC events, stating that the team’s consistency and experience have set them apart, making them the strongest India side.

“It’s really hard to argue a point against that,” Ponting said when asked if the current Indian group is the strongest ever assembled in T20I cricket.

“If you look at this, not just the T20I team but their white-ball record in ICC events over the last five or six years, it’s quite remarkable.

“A lot of people probably identified before this tournament started the depth and the strength that this current Indian team had, and also the experience that they have.”

India’s high risk, high reward approach paid off in the T20 World Cup 2026 as they lifted the trophy by beating New Zealand in the final at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on March 8.

With this triumph, India became the first team to defend the title, win it thrice and win it on home soil.

“This is a very, very strong Indian white-ball team, not just a T20 team. Back-to-back World Cups, hats off to them,” Ponting added.

According to the former Australian captain, the Indian players’ experience of playing high-pressure cricket, both internationally and in the IPL, has helped shape a squad built for global tournaments.

“The one thing that’s probably overlooked with this current team is the amount of experience and the amount of cricket a lot of these guys have played, whether it’s international cricket or even just the IPL,” Ponting said.

“The IPL games are every bit as big as international games anyway, so this Indian team came in well primed with great balance and a great squad,” he remarked.

India's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign was nearly flawless as they lost only one match. The tournament co-hosts defeated USA, Namibia, Pakistan and Netherlands in the group stage, before losing to South Africa in the Super 8s.

However, the Suryakumar Yadav-led side bounced back brilliantly and outclassed Zimbabwe, West Indies, England and New Zealand in the remaining matches to secure the title.

Ponting reckons India’s one defeat in the competition came at the perfect moment. “You win 12 matches on the trot, there’s bound to be an off day. And I am glad it’s come early. It might just be the shake-up India needed. They would have learned from that experience and won’t take things for granted,” he concluded.
