After the Indian cricket team won the T20 World Cup 2026, captain Suryakumar Yadav revealed head coach Gautam Gambhir's stirring speech in the dressing room. India won a record third T20 World Cup title after decisively defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final that was played in Ahmedabad on March 8.
Gambhir spoke to the team while the T20 World Cup trophy was on the dressing room table in Ahmedabad. He claimed that "nothing else matters" more than the title and that even if supporters forget 100 wins in bilateral games, the World Cup victory will always be remembered.
“This is the most important thing in our dressing room; nothing else matters. You can win 100 bilateral matches, and no one will remember. But they will always remember this trophy,” Gambhir said as revealed by Suryakumar Yadav.
"In the first four games, we didn't give him a chance to laugh—but after that I think he was very happy watching this team, because I don't think any T20 side in India has ever batted like this, scoring 250 and 256 and chasing well. I think after the final he smiled the most,” Suryakumar Yadav told Indian Express.
Suryakumar also opened up about India winning back-to-back T20 World Cup titles.
"It feels great, winning back-to-back," he said.
Suryakumar went into further detail about the team's careful planning and strategic approach during the competition in an exclusive conversation with ICC.
"We knew that this tournament was going to happen in India, so our preparations were spot on. We understood how the conditions would be, what we needed to do, and how we wanted to play. I think "care" is the right word, which I felt seeped into this team slowly when the tournament started, thinking about each other and what the team required at a given point. This was the mantra for this year's edition," Yadav said.
The Indian team's next assignment will be a home series against Afghanistan, featuring one Test and three ODIs.
