Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has shared his view after India won the T20 World Cup 2026 tournament. He stated that India’s three T20 World Cup wins don’t even come close to their 1983 and 2011 ICC ODI World Cup wins.
India won the T20 World Cup for the third time, making them the first team to do so. They defeated New Zealand in the final last Sunday. India was upset by South Africa in their first Super 8 encounter, but they came back to win four straight matches to win the championship.
India became the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title, as well as the first to win the event while hosting it. Manjrekar, on the other hand, was unimpressed, claiming that the yearly world titles should be viewed in context.
“In time we need to put these world titles given out every year in proper perspective. India’s T20 WC wins don’t come remotely close to their 50 overs WC wins of 1983 under Kapil Dev & 2011 under Dhoni in terms of its pure challenge & it’s sanctity,” Manjrekar posted on X.
He further provided a hierarchy for men’s ICC titles for the betterment of fans and kept the ODI World Cup at the top, followed by the WTC final, the T20 World Cup, and then the Champions Trophy.
“Slowly, a hierarchy/ranking of men’s ICC titles is taking shape up in the minds of cricket fans. It goes something like this- 1) 50 overs World Cup. 2) ICC Test championship, 3) T20 WC 4) Champions trophy,” he added.
India had won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 and have reached the WTC final in 2021 and 2023.
