Former India cricketer-turned-commentator Ravi Shastri has made many moments of the Indian team memorable with his words behind the mic. The most famous of them was when he perfectly described India’s 2011 World Cup winning moment, when MS Dhoni hit Nuwan Kulasekara for a six to win the final and the trophy.  

Shastri was in the commentary box when India won the 2011 ODI World Cup, ending a 28-year wait. Fans still remember his "MS Dhoni finishes off in style" statement from 15 years ago, when the former skipper smashed the winning six against Sri Lanka in the final.

However, when India defeated New Zealand in the final of the T20 World Cup 2026, Ravi Shastri’s words failed to convey the feeling of billions of Indian cricket fans. Shastri perhaps was not aware that when Jacob Duffy was caught by Tilak Varma on the boundary off Abhishek Sharma’s bowling, New Zealand was all out and India had won.

Shastri said: "Taken in the deep. The ninth wicket goes down.”

However, as the Indian team began celebrating, Shastri realized that India had actually won the trophy and regained his composure, but the moment when he had to hype up the win was lost.

“And it's all done, actually. It's India who win the World Cup for the third time. The first team to win back-to-back World Cups and the first hosts to win the T20 World Cup on their home turf. It's a fantastic performance for India,” Shastri finally said.

The fans were disappointed that Ravi Shastri, with such experience in commentary, missed the winning moment and failed to bring his signature tone as India won the match and the trophy.
