
The ongoing conflict between the USA, Israel, and Iran has led to widespread Middle East airspace closures. As a result, a number of cricket teams, including South Africa, have been left stranded in India following their exit from the T20 World Cup 2026.
The Proteas bowed out of the showpiece event after losing the semifinal clash to New Zealand by nine wickets at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Wednesday (March 4).
Three days after their elimination from the tournament, South Africa opener Quinton de Kock minced no words as he questioned the ICC for keeping them in dark alongside the West Indies squad.
He also accused the apex body of being biased, citing that England contingent is leaving India before them despite finishing their campaign later.
The Harry Brook-led English side suffered a seven-run defeat in the second semifinal against co-hosts India in Mumbai on Thursday (March 5), while West Indies’ campaign ended in the Super 8s last Sunday (March 1).
Taking to Instagram story, de Kock wrote: “Funny ICC we have heard… nothing! Meanwhile England are leaving before us somehow!? West Indies and South Africa are just in the dark! Strange how different teams have pull more than others.”
Multiple Gulf countries, including Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait, have either restricted or fully shut their airspaces, resulting in disruptions across international routes.
Earlier this week, the ICC said it had activated contingency measures and was working with international carriers to secure alternative arrangements for teams.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has reached its business end, with only the final match remaining between India and New Zealand in Ahmedabad on March 8.
