Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar was left embarrassed on live TV after his national team suffered a two-wicket defeat against England in the T20 World Cup Super 8s at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday (February 24).
The outcome was a huge blow to Pakistan's chances of reaching the semi-finals, as they must now rely on other results to make the final-four.
During a discussion on the 'Game On Hai' show ahead of the game, Akhtar had hoped for Pakistan’s win and India failing to qualify for the semis.
"I just hope England play poorly so we can take the two points happily. Our joy will know no bounds if India get knocked out and we make it to the semi-finals," Akhtar had said.
However, the Rawalpindi Express was left fuming after England got the better of Pakistan in Pallekele. In a viral video, he questioned the captaincy skills of Salman Ali Agha, suggesting the batter is not capable of leading the team.
It was an embarrassing U-turn from Akhtar, who was among the first to endorse the PCB’s decision to appoint Agha as skipper.
Coming to the match, Harry Brook slammed a brilliant century as England defeated Pakistan to become the first team to reach the semi-finals.
Earlier, Sahibzada Farhan's 45-ball 63 helped Pakistan post 164/9 in 20 overs. Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman also chipped in with 25 runs each.
In rely, the Three Lions got over the line with five deliveries to spare, thanks to captain Brook’s 100 off just 51 balls with 10 fours and 4 sixes. Shaheen Afridi picked up four wickets but it was not enough for Pakistan.
