Middle-order batter Rinku Singh, who has featured in all of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 matches so far, has rushed back home due to a medical emergency in the family, NDTV reported.
According to the report, Rinku's father is suffering from stage-4 liver cancer and is currently on ventilator support. The southpaw left the team environment to be with his family during the critical time.
While Rinku did not attend India’s training session at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday (February 24), there is no clarity yet on when he will be rejoining the squad. The situation is being closely monitored by the team management.
India’s next match is scheduled against Zimbabwe in Chennai on Thursday (February 26). Having suffered a 76-run thrashing at the hands of South Africa in Ahmedabad, the defending champions are facing a must-win situation in their remaining Super 8 fixtures to have any chance of reaching the semi-finals.
Rinku Singh made his T20 World Cup debut against the USA in Mumbai on February 7, but was only able to score 6 runs from 14 balls. During India’s second Group A match against Namibia in Delhi, the left-hander managed just 1 run from 6 balls. He remained unbeaten on 11 runs from 4 balls against Pakistan in Colombo and scored 6 off three balls against the Netherlands in Ahmedabad.
Rinku failed to make a mark in India’s Super 8 opener against the Proteas in Ahmedabad, bagging a two-ball duck while batting at No. 8 in the chase of 188.
Known for his finishing ability, Rinku’s extended absence could impact India's team combination during the latter stages of the tournament.
