India’s Washington Sundar and South Africa’s David Miller clashed with one another when their teams met in the Super 8s stage of the T20 World Cup 2026. This match was played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on February 22.
Washington Sundar was preferred over Axar Patel by the Indian team management for this important clash. South Africa captain Aiden Markram had won the toss and chose to bat first. Thanks to David Miller’s brilliant 63 and support from Dewald Brevis (45) and Tristan Stubbs (44*), South Africa posted a competitive 187/7 in 20 overs.
For India, Jasprit Bumrah picked 3/15, while Arshdeep Singh took 2/28.
In response, Proteas bowlers put India under pressure with early wickets and kept it on. Shivam Dube made 42, while Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya made 18 runs each as India was bowled out for 111 runs and lost the game by 76 runs.
Marco Jansen took 4/22, while Keshav Maharaj took 3/24, as South Africa hurt India badly with this loss on the road to the semis.
During the match, Washington Sundar was irritated by David Miller, who was backing up at the non-striker’s end quite close to the stumps. He was doing so to run on the edge of the pitch, to avoid wet grass on the sides.
Sundar lost his cool during the contest as he repeatedly complained to the on-field umpire about Miller. In the 14th over, with Tristan Stubbs on strike and Miller at the non-striker’s end, Sundar bailed out of his delivery stride to point to where Miller was standing.
Once the over ended, Miller and Sundar got into a heated exchange as the batter approached the bowler in an angry mood. Both gave each other a mouthful before Stubbs, Ishan Kishan, and the on-field umpires intervened.
