Irfan Pathan was taken aback when Pakistan's Sahibzada Farhan batted conservatively for a century in the final over of the first innings against Namibia in the 2026 T20 World Cup on Wednesday (18 February).
Pakistan had reached a great position of 183/3 at the end of the 19th over, with Farhan on 99 (56) and Shadab Khan on strike at 22 (18). With off-spinner Gerhard Erasmus taking the bowling duties, both batters avoided being aggressive at the start of the 20th over.
Apparently to give Farhan the strike, Shadab hit a grounded drive for a single on the first ball. The latter also made a straightforward long-on drive to reach three digits.
“He definitely has scored a century but taking a single? Unbelievable. Unbelievable!" Pathan said on air during commentary.
Shadab hit two sixes on the next two balls to up the run-rate.
“This is what you have to do. You have to attack the off-spinner. It wasn’t there on the first three [two] balls from Farhan or Shadab,” Pathan reacted.
For the final pass, Farhan came back to the striker's end. Erasmus threw it wide, and Farhan released it, assuming it would be outside the tramline. However, the umpire ruled that it was lawful. The lack of effort infuriated Pathan.
“You would be happy that you have scored a century and that Pakistan have reached 199," But in the last over, you play a defensive shot, then you leave the last ball. Kamaal hai,” Pathan stated.
Pakistan stated 199/3 thanks to Sahibzada Farhan’s 100* with 11 fours and 4 sixes. Salman Agha made 38 and Shadab Khan made 36. Usman Tariq’s four wickets and Shadab Khan’s three scalps kept Namibia to 97. Pakistan won by 102 runs and qualified for the Super 8s.
