Former India cricketer Sourav Ganguly stated that people mistake the current Pakistan team with the one that had gun players like Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, Inzamam Ul Haq, and Saeed Anwar. His words came after India soundly defeated Pakistan by 61 runs inthe T20 World Cup 2026 match on Sunday.
India posted 175/7 in 20 overs thanks to Ishan Kishan’s 77 after being asked to bat first by the Pakistan captain. In response, Pakistan was bowled out for 114 runs. This win helped India qualify for the Super 8s stage as well.
Sourav Ganguly commented on the India-Pakistan rivalry and how one-sided it has become in recent years in favour of the Men in Blue, saying that "a big match doesn't really exist anymore" in what is supposed to be cricket's "greatest rivalry".
With their victory, India now leads Pakistan 8-1 in their T20 World Cup head-to-head record, which increases to 16-1 when ODI World Cup matches are included.
The Men in Blue also had a 14-3 advantage over their neighbours in 17 T20Is, including a 'Bowl Out' triumph in the 2007 T20 World Cup in South Africa.
“A big match doesn’t really exist anymore; those kinds of matches used to happen in the past. We make the mistake of thinking of Pakistan as the team of Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, and Saeed Anwar, but that Pakistan no longer exists,” Ganguly said to IANS.
“So, in my view, it’s not a big match. For me, the real big matches are India vs Australia, India vs South Africa, and India vs England. There is a huge difference between the teams, so the result is somewhat expected. The gap in quality is more noticeable than the result itself,” the former India captain added.
