India opened their T20 World Cup 2026 tournament against the USA on February 7, 2026. The Group A match was played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
USA captain Monank Patel won the toss and chose to bowl first. Mohammed Siraj was included in India XI, as Jasprit Bumrah sat out with an illness.
Ishan Kishan made 20, while Abhishek Sharma got out on the first ball for a duck. Tilak Varma also contributed 25 in 16 balls, but the USA bowlers managed to take wickets at regular intervals, reducing India to 77/6 in the 13th over.
But Suryakumar Yadav held one end up and hammered 84* in 49 balls with 10 fours and 4 sixes, and with Axar Patel making 14, took India to a respectable 161/9 in 20 overs. Shadley van Schalkwyk starred with 4/25 in his four overs.
Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh gave India a dream start, dismissing the top three USA batters for single-digit scores. Siraj took care of the openers, and Arshdeep removed USA captain Monank Patel for a duck.
The middle order clicked for the USA as Milind Kumar (34), Sanjay Krishnamurthi (37), and Shubham Ranjane (37) scored well. But they remained behind the asking rate and only managed 132/8 in 20 overs. Mohammed Siraj took three wickets, while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel took two wickets.
Suryakumar Yadav won the Player of the Match. India will next play Namibia in Delhi on February 12.
The Indian cricket fraternity was all praises for the Indian bowlers and Suryakumar Yadav for leading the Men in Blue to win.
