Team India suffered a humiliating 110-run defeat in what was a must-win third ODI for them against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Wednesday (August 7).

Chasing 249 to win, India’s innings folded for a paltry 138 in 26.1 overs. The visiting batters once again struggled against the Lankan spinners as no one in the line-up managed to touch the 40-run mark.

With this thrashing, Men in Blue conceded the three-match series 2-0 after the opening ODI ended in a tie.

Reflecting on the touring team’s dismal display, former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali opined that India missed the trick by not picking Yashasvi Jaiswal and Suryakumar Yadav in the ODI squad.

"This series has shown that Yashasvi Jaiswal is a far better player than Shubman Gill. It was a massive blunder from the selection committee to not pick Yashasvi Jaiswal and Suryakumar Yadav," Basit said while speaking on his YouTube channel.

Basit was critical of the Indian batters’ approach in the 50-over series, noting that Virat Kohli looked off-color and others didn’t show enough responsibility.

"Yes, Virat Kohli looked out of form, but what were the others doing? They were just looking to hit good-looking shots and fours. Rishabh Pant too hit a four off the first ball. This is not cricket," he remarked.

Basit Ali also suggested that India must pick T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav over Shreyas Iyer in the ODI side, considering the former’s ability to counter the spinners with sweeps and reverse sweeps.

"Shreyas Iyer has an average of over 40. However, Suryakumar Yadav is 1000 times better than Shreyas Iyer. You needed someone who could play the sweep and reverse sweep. Suryakumar and Jaiswal would have tackled these spinners very easily," he stated.

Basit predicted a bright future for India youngster Riyan Parag, who made his ODI debut in the final match against Sri Lanka.

On debut, Parag took three wickets (3/54 in 9 overs) with his leg-spin and scored 15 runs while batting at No. 7.

"When Riyan Parag received his ODI cap from Virat Kohli, my heart said that this guy is going to be a superstar. However, he had to bat out of position. When you pick somebody, you must give him a proper chance. His development will be faster if he gets to play in tough situations. If I was part of the Indian team management, I would have sent him at No. 4," the former Pakistan batter said.
