Virat Kohli was in the limelight for the second time in the field during the second ODI between Sri Lanka and India being played in Colombo on August 4, 2024. Sri Lanka had won the toss and chosen to bat first once again.
India came into this match unchanged and Mohammed Siraj gave India the perfect start by removing the dangerous Pathum Nissanka on the first ball of the Sri Lankan innings.
Then Kusal Mendis (30) and Avishka Fernando (40) added 74 runs for the second wicket. But then Washington Sundar struck twice in a row and dismissed both the set batters.
Then Sadeera Samarawickrama was dismissed by Akshar Patel and Janith Liyanage fell to Kuldeep Yadav. Washington Sundar returned to take the crucial wicket of Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka for 25 runs.
While it looked like Sri Lanka would finish somewhere close to 200, Dunith Wellalage (39) and Kamindu Mendis (40) helped the team add 79 runs in the last 10 overs as they finished on 240/9 in 20 overs.
On the last ball of the Sri Lankan innings, Jeffrey Vandersay hit the ball towards mid-off where Rohit Sharma tried to aim the ball at the non-striker's end. But he missed and the ball went towards mid-on.
In middle of this, Akila Dhananjaya decided to go for the second run, but Virat Kohli swooped in and picked the ball, running towards the stumps at the batting end. He managed to remove the bails before Akila could reach the crease.
This run out of Kohli was similar to the one MS Dhoni did against Bangladesh in the 2016 T20 World Cup tournament.
