Team India eked out a thrilling win over Sri Lanka in the third and final T20I at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday (July 31).
Chasing 138 to win, the hosts needed just nine runs off the last 12 balls with six wickets in hand. When the visitors were staring down the barrel, India skipper Suryakumar Yadav and middle-order batter Rinku Singh stunned everyone with their bowling heroics.
The duo did a brilliant job in the penultimate and final overs to take the game into the Super Over, where the visitors outplayed Sri Lanka to clinch the series 3-0.
After the match, Rinku was bestowed with the ‘Fielder of the Series’ award. He received the medal from assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate.
In a video shared by the BCCI, fielding coach T Dilip lauded the Indian players for always trying to make a difference in a match with their fielding.
“Very well done. I always believe the fielding in T20 is like a firefighter in an emergency. You need to be quick, decisive, and fearless and you all showed that. What stood out for me in this series was that everyone was consistently aiming to make a difference in the field especially considering the tough conditions in the field. Really well done,” Dilip said.
He also revealed that Riyan Parag, Ravi Bishnoi, and Rinku Singh were in competition for the ‘Fielder of the Series’ award, which was eventually secured by the left-hander.
Coming to the match, Washington Sundar showed his brilliance with the ball in the Super Over for India as he dismissed Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka in just three balls conceding just two runs.
The tourists chased down the three-run target in the first ball itself as captain Suryakumar guided the ball towards fine leg for a boundary.
The two teams will now square off in a three-match ODI series, starting on August 2 in Colombo.
