SL v IND 2024: “Stop being salty,” Fans slam Manjrekar as his blunt post about Gambhir’s hype as head coach goes viral

Gambhir is all set to begin his tenure as India head coach with the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka.

Sanjay Manjrekar and Gautam Gambhir | GettyFormer cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has created quite a stir with his cryptic social media post, stating that there is no correlation between a coach and World Cup wins.

Manjrekar's statement comes at a time when Gautam Gambhir assumed the role of India head coach after the end of Rahul Dravid's tenure.

Under Dravid, India lifted the T20 World Cup 2024 title in Barbados last month. It was their fourth World Cup triumphs (two each in T20Is and ODIs) in total.

In his tweet, Manjrekar mentioned the names of India’s World Cup-winning coaches and further wrote that it is not about the coaches but Indian cricket.

"No coach, Lalchand Rajput, Gary Kirsten & Dravid. Coaches when India won WCs in 1983, 2007, 2011 & 2023. It’s really about Indian cricket, not who the coach is. Time we stop thinking there is a direct correlation," Manjrekar wrote on X.

The post didn’t go down well with a lot of fans, who saw it as a dig towards Gautam Gambhir.

Here are the reactions:

Gambhir is all set to begin his tenure as India head coach with the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, starting on Saturday (July 27).

The 42-year-old has been roped in by the BCCI with a lot of expectations after he mentored Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL title earlier this year.
