SL v IND 2026: WATCH- Shubman Gill’s stunning backwards running catch to dismiss Kamindu Mendis

Sri Lanka made 290 in first innings and were asked to follow on by India.

Shubman Gill's brilliant catch to dismiss Kamindu Mendis | XThe ongoing second Test between Sri Lanka and India is being played at the SSC Ground in Colombo. India had made 503/9 after winning the toss and choosing to bat first thanks to centuries by Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel.

Sri Lanka gave a good fight in their first innings and thanks to 80 by Pasindu Sooriyabandara and a century by Sonal Dinusha, posted 290 runs. India had a lead by 213 runs and Shubman Gill decided to enforce the follow-on.

India dismissed Lahiru Udara for 3 and Kamil Mishara for 32, but then Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Kamindu Mendis (55) posted a resistance. They added 115 runs for the third wicket as Sri Lanka inched towards cutting down the deficit.

This partnership looked dangerous for India and it came to an end thanks to some brilliance by India captain Shubman Gill.

Mendis claimed a four and a six despite facing a couple short-pitched deliveries during the innings. The batter was self-assured enough to swing the bat across the ball's line and score another boundary. The connection wasn't on the bat's sweet spot this time. The ball took off and headed in the direction of the square leg cordon.

Shubman Gill covered the substantial ground by locking track back after spotting the ball. He even made a few circles, but he never looked away from the ball. He made a terrific, clean catch after diving.
